What are we?
Miscalcul[Asian] is a youth-led global literary magazine devoted to pushing the Asian and Asian-Pacific Islander narrative in current news, politics, and pop culture around the world. We are a quarterly magazine and a community of Asians dedicated to promoting the Asian identity through different mediums.
We believe in complete racial visibility within the Asian community. What that looks like in practice is continuously giving underrepresented or invisible voices within the Asian community a space and amplifying their voices.
Diversity & Inclusion
We will ensure that our work environment is one that accepts and encourages all Asians, regardless of their nationality, their background or their beliefs, to share their work whilst still being conscious to not spread defamatory sentiments. We will ensure our social media presence is inclusive of all people who identify as Asians or as Asian-Pacific Islanders. We do not claim to speak for all Asians, we are a platform where Asians can speak for themselves.
We capitalize on spreading awareness on global issues related to Asians. We strive to cover a diverse array of issues from different countries around the world.
Bridge the Gap
We are here to bridge the gap between Asian diaspora and Asians living in their homeland. Our platform acts as a vessel to engage Asians in meaningful conversations about their respective similarities, struggles and differences.
We are an organization that aims to highlight Asian LGBTQA+ voices. Not only, providing a voice for the community, but also recognize the history of the Asian LGBTQA+ community and their contributions to social activism.
Represent Asians and Asian-Pacific Islanders
According to the U.S. Department of Labor Office of Federal Contract Compliance Programs, an Asian-Pacific Islander is "a person with origins in any of the original peoples of the Far East, Southeast Asia, South Asia, or the Pacific Islands. This area includes, for example, China, Japan, Korea, Indonesia, the Philippines and Samoa; and in South Asia, includes India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Nepal, and Bhutan." We take this definition when discussing the term Asian-Pacific Islanders. We recognize the distinction between Asian-Pacific Islanders and Pacific Islanders and acknowledge that the two have very distinct cultural and historical backgrounds.
We are an organization that recognizes our privileges and stands in solidarity with all other racial groups that have or continue to be oppressed. We use our platform to advocate on behalf of these groups as well—in solidarity we stand.
